A Spirit of Unity at the Summit Interfaith Council Meeting

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Galatians 5:22–23

Our Interfaith rep, Rich Nisley shared the following report:

The Summit Interfaith Council (SIC) gathered in our branch church at noon on Tuesday, May 13. This meeting came as a result of my request at a previous SIC gathering. The atmosphere was deeply fraternal, and the warmth of fellowship was felt by all—as captured in the group photo.

Our church provided lunch for the attendees, catered by Mazzella’s Delicatessen & Gourmet Market in Mountainside. Amanda Parrish (of Grace) kindly assisted with dietary-friendly sandwiches, along with fresh salads and cookies.

I opened the meeting with silent prayer, recognizing God’s loving presence and guidance. This was followed by a reading from Galatians 5:22–23 on the “Fruits of the Spirit.” Per SIC custom, I then gave a brief overview of our Summit church’s history, highlighting the importance of our public Reading Room and our tradition of hosting annual Christian Science lectures. Attendees were invited to take a complimentary copy of the April 7th Christian Science Monitor Weekly—about six copies were taken.

The meeting lasted roughly an hour and concluded with the election of three officers for the coming year, starting this September. I currently serve on the Nominating Committee. Rev. Blake Scalet of St. John’s Lutheran Church was elected to succeed Rev. Robin Tanner as president.

Rev. Tanner had graciously approved the use of our church for this meeting. When she and I met in our Reading Room recently, she shared that it was her first visit to our church—and she seemed quite receptive to Christian Science. I’ve grown close with several SIC members and plan to visit their worship services in return. This week, Cindy and I will be attending a service at Congregation Beth Hatikivah, led by Rabbi Allyson.
