Thinking About Independence
Our Spiritual Birthright
Each July we are reminded of the value of independence, not only as a cherished national heritage but as a spiritual birthright. Mary Baker Eddy, in her July 4, 1897 address in New Hampshire, beautifully expressed that “…healthy thoughts are reality and strength” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 252). This kind of independence begins within, in the quiet victory of thought over fear, doubt, and harmful habits. It is about allowing divine Mind to govern, bringing freedom from anything that would try to weigh us down.
True freedom is not just about what we are free from but what we are free to be.
We are free to think and act from God’s harmony, to live with grace, and to let divine Love shape our steps. As we nurture these healthy, God-governed thoughts, we find that strength and stability are not fragile. They are our natural state. This spiritual independence is available to all, in every moment, regardless of our circumstances.
I recently read a powerful article in the Christian Science Sentinel about breaking a long-standing bad habit. The author asks, “So why had I allowed this pattern of behavior to plague me for so long without putting up a better fight, in other words, without taking a stronger spiritual stand in my thought?” The piece reminds us, “Regardless of what is challenging any of us, we can take a stand for our right to healthy thoughts and actions.” If you would like to explore how to claim your independence from any unhealthy pattern, you can read the full article here:
